What is Kumbh mela ?

Kumbh Mela is the biggest Hinduism fair and a spiritual congregation held every 12 years in four Holy cities Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Tryambakeshwar-Nashik in India. Unity of Hindus is the main objective of the Kumbh Mela. The 4 places of ‘Kumbh Mela’ are symbols of 4 directions. These Kumbh Melas used to be held even before modern means of transport were invented by man. During that time, it was not easy to come together from 4 directions of Bharat and therefore, these Kumbh Melas become the common point of symbols of Hindu unity and culture.

During the Kumbh mela, crores of devotees from all around India and overseas congregate to perform religious rituals such as bathing in River Ganga, performing spiritual practice, donating, Pitrutarpan, ritual of shraddha, darshan of Saints, debates on Dharma etc. This is a congregation of those who have faith in Dharma. It is a unique occasion when not only devotees, but Deities, Sages, Saints and 330,000,000 tirthas too come to the Kumbh mela.

This pilgrimage (every 12 years) by Hindus to obtain the spiritual benefits at these pilgrimage sites is known as Kumbh mela.

What is the meaning of Kumbh?

Kumbh means Kalash or Gha’t or Ghada, that is, a Pot.
Kalash – Kalash symbolises sanctity or auspiciousness.
According to religious scriptures (According to Rigvediya Brahmakarmasamuchhya), Shrivishnu resides at the mouth of the kalash, Rudra (Mahadev) in the throat, Matrukagan (Group of Female Deities) in the middle, Brahma at the bottom and the Earth (that comprises of seven seas and seven Continents) in the centre.
Similarly, Rugveda, Yajurveda, Samveda and Atharveda also reside in the kalash along with their branches.

What is the history of Kumbh Parva ?

The Devas and Asuras came together to acquire the pot of Amruta (Divine nectar) and decided to churn the ocean of milk. The king of serpents, Vasuki, was requested to serve as a rope around the mountain Meru to churn the ocean.

During the churning, fourteen unique items emerged from the ocean – Poison, Kamdhenu (A wish-fulfi lling cow), Uchhaihashrava (A white horse), Airavat (An elephant with four tusks), Koustubha mani (A diamond), Parijat Kalpavruksha (A wishfulfilling tree), Devanganas (Celestial maidens) such as Rambha etc., Shri Lakshmidevi (Consort of Shrivishnu), Sura (Alcohol), Som (Moon), Haridhanu (A Divine bow), a conch, Dhanvantari (The Doctor of Deities) and Amrutkalash (Pot of Amrut). When Deity Dhanvantari emerged from the ocean holding the Amrutakumbha, the Devas thought that if the Asuras became immortal upon drinking Amruta, they will create havoc in the world. They signalled Indra’s son, Jayant, who instantly took the Amrutakumbha from Deity Dhanvantari and ran in the direction of Heaven. To get hold of the Amrutakumbha, Devas and Asuras fought each other for 12 days and 12 nights, which are 12 years for the human. During the battle, the Amrutakumbha was kept down 12 times. Suryadev protected it and the moon took care that the Amruta does not evaporate. The planet Guru fought the Asuras and protected the Kumbha. The 12 places where the drops of Amruta fell from the pot are considered to be the Kumbha Parva places as per the special position of the above mentioned planets. Of these 12 places 8 are in other lokas (Regions) and 4 are on earth – Prayagraj, Hardwar (Haridwar), Ujjain and Tryambakeshwar- Nashik – are included in these 12 places. The Kumbha Parva is celebrated in these places when the position of the planets and the tithi on which the Amruta drops fell on earth coincide. The Amrutkalash is also remembered during the Kumbh Parva.

Why is Kumbh mela held every twelve years?

Since Jupiter takes 12 years to cross a zodiac, Kumbhayoga (Conjunction of Planets) takes place every 12 years. Three important occasions – ‘Kanyagat’ when Jupiter is in the Virgo sign of the zodiac, ‘Simhastha’ when Jupiter is in Leo sign of the zodiac and ‘Kumbh Mela’ when Jupiter is in Aquarius sign of the zodiac are considered religiously important from the perspective of Hindu Dharma.

What are the other types of Kumbh Mela ?

1. Mahakumbh mela
Every 12 years, a Kumbha Mela is held at the Triveni Sangam of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati in Prayag. It is called ‘Mahakumbh Mela’.

2. Ardha Kumbh mela
Kumbh mela held every six years is called as Ardha Kumbh mela. However, the Kumbh mela held every 12 years gives the true benefits of a Kumbh mela.

3. Simhastha Kumbh mela
This is a name is given to Kumbh mela held at Ujjain and Tryambakeshwar-Nashik. When Jupiter alone, or along with Sun are in Leo sign of the zodiac, the Kumbh mela is also referred to as Simhastha.

When and where is Kumbh Mela held ?

The place where Kumbh Mela should be held and its timings have the foundation on planetary calculations. The Moon (Chandra), Sun (Surya) and Jupiter (Guru) provided unique assistance to Gods in the battle between Devas and Asuras for protecting the Amrutkumbh, the timeframe of the Kumbh Mela is decided when their speciﬁc alignment occurs in the zodiac. Jupiter (Guru) played a significant role in fighting with the Asuras, hence its alignment is considered crucial for deciding the place and dates of Kumbh Mela.

Prayagraj Kumbh Mela

When Jupiter enters Aquarius(Kumbha sign) and Sun and Moon enter Capricorn on Magha Amavasya, the Kumbh Mela is held at Prayag (Allahabad). Every 12 years, a Prayag Kumbh Mela is held at the Triveni Sangam of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati in Prayag. It is called ‘Mahakumbha Mela’. This Kumbha Parva comprises three Parvakals (Auspicious time) – Makar Sankranti, Maghi (Mouni) Amavasya and Vasant Panchami. The Maghi (Mouni) Amavasya is the principal Parva and is referred to as ‘Purnakumbha’. The Magha Pournima is also considered as a Parva (Auspicious) time. A Holy dip in the Ganga has special significance on the days of all the four Parvas. The Kumbha Mela comes every 12 years; every 6 years, the Kumbha Mela organised is called the ‘Ardha Kumbha Mela’.

Kumbh Mela Haridwar

When Jupiter enters the Aquarius and Sun enters Aries, the Kumbh Mela is held at Haridwar. During the Parvakal on 1. Mahashivratri, 2. Chaitra Amavasya, 3. Chaitra Pournima or Vaishakha Pratipada (the day on which the Sun is in the Aries and Jupiter is in the Kumbha sign) Rajyogi snan (Shahisnan) is taken.

Simhastha Kumbha Parva of Ujjain

When Jupiter is in Leo and Sun is in Aries, Simhastha Kumbha Parva is held in Ujjain. On the day of Vaishakha Pournima since it is Parvakal Rajyogi snan (Shahisnan) (Holy bath) is taken. Holy bath is also taken on Chaitra Pournima, Chaitra Amavasya, Akshayya Trutiya, and Ekadashi. The bath in River Kshipra in Ujjain in the month of Vaishakha is considered to be more Holy.

Nashik Kumbh Mela

When Jupiter as well as Sun are in the Leo sign, Nashik Kumbh Mela takes place at Nashik-Tryambakeshwar. During this period, Rajyogi snan (Shahisnan) is taken during the Parvakal on 1. Shravan Krushna Panchami, 2. Shravan Krushna Amavasya, 3. Bhadrapad Shukla Panchami (Only at Nashik) and Vaman Jayanti (Only at Tryambakeshwar). Apart from this, a special Parvakal exists during the auspicious occasions of Vaidhruti and Vyatipat.

Who participates in the Kumbh Mela, and what is its significance for them?

The Kumbh Mela attracts devout Hindus from all over the world, drawn by their faith in Hindu principles and the desire to gain spiritual benefits and improve their lives. The event does not require any entry fee or registration, making it accessible to everyone, including non-Hindus who wish to derive spiritual benefits. However, the benefits depend on the faith and sincerity with which activities are performed.

Key participants include:
1. Devotees: They attend in large numbers, seeking spiritual growth and cleansing of sins through rituals like bathing in the holy Ganga.
2. Ascetics and Saints: Ascetics, particularly from various Akhadas, are central figures. Skilled in scriptures and traditional weapons, they historically protected Hindu Dharma from invaders. Their Rajyogi Snan (Shahisnan) is the most significant ritual, symbolizing their role as Dharma protectors.
3. Hindu Organizations: These groups actively engage in educating and guiding Hindus on practicing and understanding Hinduism better, making the Kumbh Mela a unifying platform for Dharma-related efforts.

The Kumbh Mela is a convergence of faith, spirituality, and tradition, fostering unity among Hindus and offering opportunities for collective learning and practice of Hindu principles.

What is an Akhada and what are the types of Akhadas?

At the gathering at the Kumbh Mela a continuous (akhand) appeal was made to all to come together to wield weapons for the protection of Dharma. With passage of time the word akhand morphed to become akhada. In the Hindu Dharma out of the four stages (ashrams) of life most importance is accorded to the stage of renunciation (sanyasashram) and it is renunciation which is necessary to be able to attain Self-realisation.
After inception of the first akhada of Naga renunciants, as their number started growing new akhadas started being formed. Their order is given further.
1. Shri Awahan Akhada, 2. Shri Atal Akhada, 3. Shri Anand Akhada, 4. Shri Niranjani Akhada, 5. Shri Juna Akhada, 6. Shri Panchagni Akhada, 7. Shri Nathpanthi, 8. Shri Vaishnavi Bairagi, 9. Shri Udasini Panchayati Bada Akhada, 10. Shri Udasini Naya Akhada and 11. Shri Nirmal Panchayati Akhada

Why do the Naga sadhus wield weapons?

The Islamic invaders used all their strength and tried to wipe out Sanatan Hindu Dharma. Hence it was decided that even renunciants would wield weapons in self-defence and to protect the Hindu Dharma. Renunciants engrossed in Scriptures (shaastra) began wielding weapons (shastra).

What is Rajayogi snan (Shahi snan) at the Kumbh Mela?

The Rajayogi snan (Shahi snan) is a ceremonial and spiritually significant bath undertaken by Saints and Ascetics of the Akhadas on the prescribed days at the beginning of the Kumbh Mela. It marks a divine commencement of the festival and symbolizes purity, devotion, and the unison of spiritual power.

Process of the Rajayogi snan (Shahi snan):

1. Timing: It begins early at 4 a.m. on the designated days.

2. Weapon-Wielding Procession: Saints and Ascetics proceed in a grand procession, carrying traditional weapons. Locals adorn the path with rangolis and flower petals, enhancing the divine atmosphere.
