The Guru-disciple tradition is unique to Bharat. It is only because of this tradition that despite various foreign invasions, the Hindu Dharma has stood the test of time.

The criteria to recognise a Saint depend on the Path He follows – Dnyanyoga (Path of Knowledge), Karmayoga (Path of Action), Bhaktiyoga (Path of Devotion) etc. Depending on the spiritual level, the criteria can also differ.

The Guru depends on faith. In one’s faith itself lies the greatness of the Guru. The Guru too depends on your faith. He lies in your faith. – H.H. Bhaktaraj Maharaj In the first line, the Guru refers to the Guru’s external form. Only if one has faith in a Guru can He function as a Guru. The second line refers to the Omniscient Guru within.

The Guru is one who shows the way to realise God through His own behaviour and guidance, and in the end, actually makes them realise God.

Qualities of a disciple – To be accepted as a disciple by a Guru, one needs to gain the grace of a Saint.

Every seeker in the primary stage has read that, in Spirituality, the ultimate means of salvation is a Guru, whereas a seeker in the advanced stage actually experiences it. Most seekers are unaware of what they should do to acquire a Guru.
