USA Many states have raised cigarette taxes as high as $1.51
a pack to replenish depleted state treasuries and discourage
teenage smoking. New York State last year raised its cigarette
tax to $1.50 a pack, and New York City imposed an additional
other $1.50 tax; the cost of a pack of cigarettes is now more
than $7 in New York City. However, Virginia has held fast at
2.5 cents the nation's lowest tax on a pack even
