Importance

Satsang means to be in the company of 'Sat', that is, divine consciousness, or in other words, to get the experience chaitanya (divine consciousness). All efforts in spiritual practice are to obtain chaitanya / divine consciousness because success in life – whether materialistic or spiritual – depends on the proportion of divine consciousness that is active in each one of us. Till we reach the stage where we develops divine consciousness within us, it is necessary to get it from an outside source. This is possible in the company of Saints and also in weekly satsangs conducted by Sanatan.

Various sources of satsang
Attending spiritual discourses, visiting religious places such as churches, temples, mosques, etc., staying at places of pilgrimage, reading spiritual texts written by Saints, being in the company of fellow seekers, visiting Saints or one’s Guru, etc., are examples of satsang of a progressively superior quality. In actuality, there is a continuous flow of chaitanya all around us: in the company of seekers, in Sanatan publications or other holy texts, periodicals published by Sanatan, banners, aprons and caps done by seekers of Sanatan, etc.. Everyday we come in contact with these items; but, whether we are able to absorb their divinity depends on how subtly pure (sattvik) we are.

Attitude to derive maximum benefit of satsangs
One should go with the specific attitude and capacity to absorb divinity in a satsang. How can we prepare ourselves to absorb this divinity? By doing the spiritual practice of chanting effectively, both quantitatively and qualitatively, by prayer, by expressing gratitude, by decreasing our raja-tama qualities and increasing sattvik qualities. Throughout the week, if we do not do our spiritual practice correctly and get covered with raja-tama, when we reach the satsang, the cumulative sattvikata of the satsang decreases because of us. And whatever sattvikata exists is used up only to reduce our raja-tama. Hence, we should pay attention to our daily spiritual practice, we should try to reach the satsang at least five minutes before the scheduled time, pray and chant prior to starting and participate completely in the satsang. Only then can we gain maximum chaitanya in the satsang.

Benefits of satsang
Due to the cumulative sattvikta of all the attending seekers, besides the manifesting of positive energies and Deities during satsang, a seeker’s spiritual level is temporarily elevated. Due to this, one gets spiritual experiences, which further encourage a seeker's spiritual practice (sadhana). Being an environment conducive to the experience of God or Sat, satsangs are an important adjunct to maintain the consistency in one’s spiritual practice.
