About the Sanatan Organization

The Establishment and Objectives

    H. H. Dr. Jayant Balaji Athavale under the guidance and blessings of His Sadguru Saint Bhaktaraj Maharaj established the Sanatan Bharatiya Sanskruti Sanstha in 1990. For the smooth running of the organization after its tremendous growth, it was renamed as Sanatan Sanstha by Dr. Athavale on March 24,1999. The main aim of the organization is to present Spirituality in a scientific language for the curious (jidnyasu) and to guide seekers.

Sanatan: Sanatan is that which is always new, full of chaitanya (divine consciousness) and which never ages. This can only be true of an eternal creation of the Almighty. The consonant ‘s’ appears in the organization's name three times, and it refers to the ‘bija (seed)’ of the sun. The sun represents tej (radiance). Thus, Bharatiya sanskruti can be described as an eternal creation of the Almighty, which is full of chaitanya and tej.

Bharatiya (lit. Indian): 'Bha' means tej. 'Rat' means engrossed. Thus, Bharatiya are those who remain engrossed in the worship of tej, i.e., remain engrossed in spiritual practice. In other words, ‘a seeker’ from any part of the world is a Bharatiya. The mission of the sanstha, instead of being restricted to geographical India, encompasses all places wherever there are seekers. The aim of Bharatiya sanskruti is to make spiritual progress.

Bharatiya Sanskruti (lit. Indian culture): Spiritual progress is the focus of any Indian philosophy. No matter which text it is, Bhaskaracharya's Ganit Shastra (Science of Mathematics), Vatsyayan’s Kamasutra, the science of Astrology or Ayurveda, all Indian sciences have only one objective – to provide guidance on how to make spiritual progress through the pursuit of the corresponding science. In short, ‘Bharatiya sanskruti’ is an ensign for Spirituality and Spirituality is the ideal of ‘Bharatiya sanskruti’.

‘Some supporters of this great Sanskruti fear it will collapse under the onslaught of modern trends. If it is so fragile, what is the point in its surviving? Is the ‘Bharatiya sanskruti’ so weak? We do not think so! The Sanskruti (culture), which is founded on the firm rocklike basis of knowledge and experience, need not feel threatened by anything, anytime. ‘Bharatiya sanskruti’ has never been averse to new thoughts. Place any culture of the world that has been tested on the touchstone of experience and founded on knowledge alongside, ‘Bharatiya sanskruti’ will brook no contradiction with it.’

- Sane Guruji (‘No opposition to any one’, such is this culture.)

From the above it would be clear that Sanatan Bharatiya Sanskruti Sanstha refers to that organization which is full of Chaitanya and is actively engaged in the spiritual progress of seekers all over the world !

Sanatan Society for Scientific Spirituality

For easy understanding of the western audience, the organization is referred to as ‘Sanatan Society for Scientific Spirituality’ instead of ‘Sanatan Bharatiya Sanskruti Sanstha’.
